Des oiseaux by Paolo Pellegrin

This new series by Paolo Pellegrin marks the eleventh title in the Des oiseaux (On Birds) collection. Known as a member of Magnum Photos for documenting political, economic, and ecological upheavals, Pellegrin here turns to a more contemplative subject where nature takes center stage.

During a stay in Japan in 2019, initially to witness cherry blossoms, he became captivated by the aerial ballet of black kites above Shimogamo Shrine, a 7th-century Shinto shrine set in a primeval forest.

He captures the eagles in tight frames, freezing their dazzling speed as they seem to burst into or out of the image. Solo, in pairs, or in groups, these raptors glide through space in shifting choreographies.

Part of the Birds collection, the project highlights their presence in a fragile world. Ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre contributes an essay on their mythology, artistic fascination, and way of life, focusing on the black kites photographed by Pellegrin.
